This hard fought derby ended in another win for king kev.It was Sunderland who started the harder as Paul McShane smacked into Michael Owen after just a few minutes. But Owen got his own back when McShane gave him a unopposed run into the box to meet Geremi’s cross & put Newcastle one up.McShane then had a bazaar header into his own net from a corner wiped out by the ref’s whistle for a infringement. Martins was then guilty of being selfish as he took a shot when he had a line of team mates waiting for him to square the ball then Dean Whitehead had a chance but volleyed it over the bar.Sunderland were lucky to be only one down but not for long as Owen played a lovely one/two with Viduka then chipped over the defender Higginbotham but on the way through it clipped his arm & the ref gave a penalty.Owen stepped up & just got it past Gordon’s body but it had enough power to do so.
What ever Roy Keane said at half time done something to his players as they started the second half a lot better. They had more of the possession & started to have some attacks on the Newcastle goal.Danny Collins had a good header but it hit Steven Taylor & Andy Reid had a 35 yard shot which went over the bar.Bit it was Newcastle who looked more likely to add the the score when Martin’s but put through on goal by Owen only for Gordon to come out & save Sunderland by beating out his effort.Sunderland then had a chance when Kenwyne Jones rose to meet a powerful header only for Steve Harper to keep it out.Murphy then has a shot which was blocked by Faye as Sunderland tried hard to get back into the game but Newcastle found it easy to hold on.
