Wigan secure Premiership safety thanks to 2 goals from Antonio Valencia that left a Aston Villa side fighting for 5th spot & Uefa cup football next season in the balance from this unexpected result of the day.
Right from the off Wigan showed they were here to spoil the day as they started very well showing some good football which Steve Bruce had brought to the club.Olof Mellberg who was starting his last home match for Villa had to make some important tackles & it took Villa until the 20th minute to actually create a chance. A great free kick from Ashley Young found the head of Zak Knight which was heading towards goal only for Chris Kirkland to pull off a fine save.Villa started to get into the match more & the impressive Barry started to get hold of midfield & create chances.He had one himself but Kirkland made another fine save & then Agbonlahor should have done better but could only drag his shot wide.Villa tried for the rest of the half but found Wigan in determined mood.
Villa came out in the second half knowing they had to win the game to keep tabs on Everton for that 5th spot but at the same time underestimated Wigan.They started the brighter but against the run of play Wigan took the lead.Valencia picked up the ball ran towards the area & had a shot from just outside the area which was going anywhere but it took a cruel deflection of Bouma & passed the wrong footed Carson & into the net.
Villa now had to pull out all the stops to try & salvage something as they didnt want to go into the last day of the season 3 point behind Everton.Try as they did Barry was gulity of missing a chance & reo-coker should have done better. Steve Bruce
Then out of nowhere Villa were stunned.Kirkland had a goal kick which went long & it was headed on by Emile Heskey & Valencia picked up the second ball & surged past at least two defenders & pokes a hard shot past Carson who was in no position to stop it .Kirkland then produced some fine saves like he had all match to keep Villa out.The fans had seen enough & knew it weren’t there day when they saw John Carew miss a easy header from six yards.
