Liverpool secure 4th spot & one people will say they should have done better in this end of season game which wasn’t really that exciting & which left Tottenham in mid table & a poor season for them.But can look forward to next season & some new additions to the football club & maybe get into Europe but a long way from challenging the top 4. The first half started poor with both teams not really going for it & Liverpool had most of the possession but Tottenham defended even better.Voronin who made the side today had the first shot but it was very weak & Carny saved easily.A few minutes later it was Babel who had the chance but his side footed shot from the edge of the penalty area was also very weak.
Dimitar Berbatov had Tottenham’s first chance when he had a close range header from a Jamie O’Hara cross but he put the header on target but it was saved by Riena.Even though both teams triedfor a goal with Liverpool with all the football & Tottenham defending that was all that happened really & to say in was end of season was a understatement.
Tottenham made 2 substitutions at half time to change there fortunes & make them play football better so they brought on Huddlestone & Tainio.But it didn’t make a lot of difference as Liverpool where playing the better football & keeping possession better .Steven Gerrard was running it in midfield & with Torres always a threat you knew it wouldn’t be long before they would score. Torres had the first chance when he got one on one with Carny but put his shot straight at the keepers legs.Them Malbranque for Tottenham could have put them ahead but his volley was deflected into the side netting which sent the Tottenham fans mad as they thought he had scored.But for all that it was Liverpool who opened the scoring Torres was involvedwith a flick on which fell at the feet of Voronin & he calmly slotted it past Carny.
Berbatov then went straight down the other end & smashed in a volley which Reina had to be alert to & pulled off a magnificent save to deny Berbatov & Tottenhams equalizer.But it was man of the match Torres who finished the football match off when he showed some great skill moving the ball one way then the next & from the tightest of angles managed to slip the ball past Carny & Liverpool’s second.Torres now holds the record for the best goalscoring foreigner in his first season.
That was his 24th goal of the season & he nearly got his 25th & extend the record when he had a delightful chip towards the end of the match which came off the crossbar.Liverpool should have had a third late on when it was Carny who stopped that happening when he made a reaction save from his own player Hutton from scoring a silly own goal.I t wasn’t a great football match but if Liverpool could just sort themselves out they could be with the other 3 big clubs.As for Tottenham they should aim for Europe next season.
