Zenit St Petersburg made there first ever European final as they put four past a strong Bayern side.It was Bayern who started the stronger of the two & nearly took the lead after just 2 Min’s as Klose had a volley which was kicked off the line by Shirokov but moments later it was Zenit with first blood as they had a free kick on the edge of the box & it was drilled home past Oliver Kahn from Pavel Pogrebnyak.Bayern knew being a goal down was not the start they wanted so they picked up the tempo & went at Zenit & when Ribery went close when his shot from outside the box had to be gathered by the Zenit keeper on his second attempt.It was Zenit who nearly scored a second when Alesksandr Anyukov was put through by Alejandro Dominguez but it was only the feet of Kahn that stopped his goal bound shot making it two.Then Bayern should have equalised later on when a cross into the box was headed back across goal from Demichelis & Luca Toni was there on hand to somehow head the ball over the bar from close range then Demichelis was the culprit when a cross from Ribery into the box was meet by Demichelis who jumped above the keeper Malafeev only to see his header go wide.It was just before the break when Zenit made it two Zyrianov played a nice dummy which wrong footed two Bayern defenders which put him through on goal & he calmly slotted the ball Kahn into the net & sent the Zenit fans dreaming of Manchester.
The second half started with Bayern coming out with the urgency that they needed if they were going to make the final.They should have pulled on back from the start but but they saw Toni’s powerful shot pushed away from Malafeev but for all there pressure it was Zenit who increased there lead when Igor Denisov sent in a lovely cross for Fayzullin to arrive onto & head home past Kahn.Bayern were doing all they can to get back into the game but it wasn’t going to be there night.It was Zenit who was playing the best football & the football match was drifting away from Bayern & when Zenit broke down the right with Dominguez who then pulled the ball back for Pogrebnyak to shoot pasted the helpless Kahn & into the net to send Zenit into the final & Bayern wondering what went wrong.Pogrebnyak then went & picked up a stupid yellow card which will now rule him out of the final in Manchester against Rangers.
