Holland 1 Russia 3 A.E.T

Russia went through to the semi finals of Euro2008 by out playing a Holland team who looked like worthy favorites before they played Russia. It was no more than they deserved with they way they passed & moved & had the pace to totally dominate Holland. With Holland they didn’t look the same team from the group stages is it to do with most of the team taking a rest where Russia didn’t who knows but they were very flat & didn’t look like a team who wanted to win Euro 2008.
The match started in good fashion with Van Brockhurst getting down the left & crossed into the box only for Kuyt to head it wide & that was after 3 minutes Zhirkov then has a free kick which was saved by Van Der Sar. The Russians had a got chance on 7 Min’s as Aniukov crossed from the right but saw Pavluchenko heading over when he could have done better he then got to the byline himself moments later but saw his cross blocked & cleared by Engelaar. Van Der Vaart then had a free kick straight at Akinfeev then Sneijder had a shot blocked but Aniukov produced a great cross after 22 Min’s that went straight across the goal mouth but none of his team mates could get a touch. Holland then had a corner which was headed out but it came to Engelaar who had time to shoot but it went wide but if Ooijer got a touch it could have bin a goal.
All this after just 25 minutes but both teams were no trying hard to score Vaart had a free kick then went straight across the goal mouth which saw Van Nisterlrooy just miss getting a touch Arshavin then got into the Dutch box only to see his shot finger tip saved from Van Der Sar. Then Kolodin had 2 fantastic attempts one from 35 yards after a poor clearance from a corner fell to him & he smashed it towards goal which Van De Sar was at full stretch to save then he tried again a minute later from more like 40 yards & that only just flashed wide. Holland had 2 chances just before the break with Van Nistelrooy turning just outside the box But it was saved by Akinfeev & then Van Der Vaart has a shot beaten away by the keeper & that was half time.
Holland started the second half better with a Vaart free kick that went straight across the goal face but Russia controlled the next 10 minutes & went ahead. Arsharvin had a free kick that just curled wide of the far post but then they scored it was Semak who put in a great box into the Dutch box & there was Pavluchenko to place the ball past Van Der Sar & into the net they could have made it two but for Saenko putting a Arshavin cross just wide. Holland now one goal down tried to get back into the match with Vaart turning outside the box but his chip went over & from a corner Van Persie could only head wide After Pavluchenko had played in Aniukov which brought another save from Van Der Sar it was all Holland for the last 20 minutes.
Van Persie had a free kick that went well over the cross bar then they had a succession of shots which either went over the bar or was an easy save by the keeper Vaart didn’t stop trying & had 1 shot & Sneijder had at least 3 shots himself. But then they got the break through they wanted it was a Sneijder free kick that he curled into the box & there was Van Nistelrooy to head into the net to equalise Russia had one last chance before the end of the football match with Arshavin getting into the box & it took Ooijer to clear from in front of his goal & the match went into extra time.
With the scores at 1-1 extra time started & Russia dominated it from start to finish in the 1st half Arshavin ran the show he had 2 shots that only just went over then he set up Pavluchenko took a shot & it cannoned off the cross bar. Arsharvin then played in Torbinski who could only shoot straight at Van Der Sar then Kolodin had a free kick that just went wide. The second half was more exciting than the first Zyryanov cut into the penalty box & was bundled over but the ref said no penalty then Zyryanov was involved again when he played the football into the box which went to Torbinski but misses his shot it fell to Pavluchenko but he could only fire over but with 10 minutes left of the match & penalties looking likely Russia got there 2 goals. The first was man of the match Arshavin who got to the by line put in a cross no-one know how & there was Torbinski running in from no where to poke the ball home then with 3 minutes left Arsharvin got the goal he deserved straight from a throw in it found hin in the penalty box he turned & shot straight through Van Der Sars Legs & Russia where in the semi finals of Euro2008…..
