Barcelona won the Catalan derby 2-1 against Espanyol. Espanyol took a 20thminute lead through a messy Ferren Corominas strike.   Espanyol lost Anderson Nene after 45 minutes for a second bookable offence. The game had to be stopped late in second half due to crowd trouble. This disruption seemed to have effect Espanyol more than Barcelona.  Barcelona took full advantage of this disruption by equalising through Thierry Henry in the 84thminute. The goal came after a mix between Daniel Jarque and goalkeeper Carlos Kameni. Lionel Messi scored the winner from the penalty spot, this goal came 13 minutes into injury time.

Premier League Round-Up Sun 28-09-08

Sunday’s live matches saw Portsmouth hand Tottenham another defeat while Wigan beat mega rich Man City at home.

Portsmouth defeated Tottenham 2-0 to keep them rooted to the bottom of the premier league & push Portsmouth up to 9th. There was hope for Tottenham in this game as Portsmouth had conceded 10 goals in there last 2 games but it didn’t turn out like that. It was Portsmouth who created most of the chances in the first half & took the lead after 34 minutes. It was a cross coming in which saw Jermaine Jenas handle inside the penalty box & it was up to Spurs old boy Jermain Defoe to step up & score from the penalty. Tottenham tired in the second half to get back into the game but it was Portsmouth who doubled their lead after Herurelho Gomez fumbled a Armand Traore shot & there was Peter Crouch to tap in.  Tottenham couldn’t come back from that but the match did end bad for Portsmouth as Lassana Diarra was sent off for his second yellow card towards the end..

Wigan defeated Man City 2-1 at the JJB to move up to 10th were City stay 8th. The football match started very well with both teams looking like they wanted the win & nothing else but it was Wigan with the first goal. It was a scuffed corner from the left which was cleared but it fell to Antonio Valencia who was 25 yards out & he hit a fantastic strike which went screaming past Joe Hart & into the net. But it only took 7 minutes for Man City to draw level when a Elano free kick found its way to Vincent Kompany who bundled it in for the score. But on the 34th minute it took a very poor referee decision to alter the course of the match Wilson Palacios ran into the panalty box & was tackled by Javier Garrido & Palacios tumbled over it was such a bad theatrical dive it belonged in a pantomime but the ref gave the penalty & up stepped Amr Zaki to score & put Wigan back in front. The second half was all about Man City trying to get back into the game but they never really tested Wigan & it ended up a Wigan Win..

Premier League Round-Up Sat 27-09-08

Liverpool won the 208th merseyside derby thanks to Torres, Aston Villa had to come from behind to beat Sunderland, West Ham continue to win under Zola after beating Fulham, Man Utd got back to winning by beating Bolton, New Boys West Brom took the points at Middlebrough, Newcastle can’t get any worse can they? after loosing at home to Blackburn, Stoke found out just how hard it is by losing to Chelsea while other new boys Hull stun Arsenal in the result of the day.

The result of the day had to be Hull upsetting the apple cart by beating Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates. It didn’t look that way in the first half as the game was a herd fought nil-nil. But it all happened in the second half in the 51st minute in fact when Theo Walcott who made a great run into the penalty box saw his shot turned in for a own goal by Paul Mcshane. But back came Hull & after 61 minute they got there equliser when Geovanni hit a powerful shot from outside the area & it flew into the top corner. The 5 minutes later from a corner Daniel Cousin headed home to put them in front. Arsenal then tried as hard as they could to break down Hull but they hung on for a famous win

Liverpool won the 208th merseyside derby 2-0 at Goodison park. After a goalless first half the game was settled in the second half by 2 kick goals from Torres in the space of 4 minutes. The first on 59 minute was a lovely volley going under Howard from a pin point pass from Robbie Keane. The second was all about Evertons defending something they have struggled with this season & Torres sprang on this & lashed the ball past Howard for number 2. Everton couldn’t get back into the game & it got even worse when the ref showed Tim Cahill a red card for a awful challenge on Alonso..

Stoke held Chelsea for about 35 minutes but went down 2-0 in the end. It was Jose Bosingwa who did the damage when he scored & made one. He scored the first goal after Frank Lampard looped a fine pass over the Stoke defence Bosingwa showed some great skill by taking the football on the chest then smashing the ball past Sorensen & a diving Griffin. It was Bosingwa’s low cross in the second half that set up Nicolas Anelka to tap in to secure the points for Chelsea.

Man United got back to winning but not how they would like after beating Bolton 2-0. With Rooney starting on the bench Man United didn’t look like getting into Bolton & in fact it was Bolton who had the best chance when Fabrice Muamba managed to miss a goal from 6 yards out but instead sliced the ball wide. But it was the second half that started the controversy  when the ref gave United a penalty that everyone was amazed at even the Bolton manager was in raged. But they couldn’t stop Ronaldo scoring from the spot. Rooney then came off the bench to secure the points as he exchanged passes with Ronaldo & then dummied the defence & put a bending low shot past the diving Jaaskelainen..

Fulham suffered a home defeat to West Ham who are going well under Zola 2-1. It was there goal keeper Schwarzer who would have wished for a better afternoon. He gave West Ham the lead after spilling a cross from Matthew Etherington right in front of Carlton Cole who scored . Schwarzer then decided to misjudge a pass from Mark Noble who lofted it into the path of Etherington & he slotted home. Fulham did get one back from a Murphy penalty after Neill handled in the box but it was made harder after Andy Johnson was sent off for two bookable offences..

Newcastle can it get worse? after another defeat at home to Blackburn 2-1. The first was a header from Christopher Samba from a Carlos Villanueva setpiece & the Newcastle defence were everywhere the second was nearly like the first as Santa Cruz rose above the Newcastle defence to head home past Shay Given from a Brett Emerton cross to be two up at the break. Michael Owen did given them some hope as he smashed a penalty past Jason Brown at the start of the second half but it didn’t raise the team & they lose again & stay 2nd from bottom of the league..

Aston Villa had to come from behind as they beat Sunderland 2-1. It was Sunderland though who started the better & it showed as they took the lead after 10 minutes. It was a fantastic pass from Steed Malbranque which put in Djidrill Cisse who clipped it first time past Brad Friedel & into the net. But the lead didn’t last long as a Ashley Young free kick 9 minutes later found the top corner past Craig Gordon at his near post. Aston Villa’s second goal was nearly like the first as it was again a Ashley Young free kick that bounced off the Sunderland wall straight to Stillian Petrov who then drilled the football across goal & there was Carew to back-heel it into the goal..

Middlesbrough lost at home to new boys West Brom in a drab affair 1-0. The football match was all down to a piece of terrible goal keeping & not much else. It was a scramble in Middlesbrough’s penalty box that they couldn’t clear & it fell to the feet of Jonas Olsson who couldn’t get much controll but managed to have a stab at the football but it didn’t have much punch but somehow it still had enough strength to trickle past Ross Turnbull in the Middlesbrough goal..

Brighton & Qpr produced the shocks of the night beating their premiership opponents Man City & Aston Villa. Tottenham beat Newcastle in the bottom of the table match. Chelsea thrashed poor Portsmouth again while Wigan defeated Ipswich & Blackburn edged Everton.

Brighton in this rearranged game defeated new money bags team Man City 5-3 on pens after a 2-2 draw in extra time. Man City took the lead on 64 minutes after a goalless first half through Gelson Fernandes but Brighton got back on terms in the 89thminute with Glenn Murray scoring which put the game into extra time. But it was Brighton who took the lead through sub Joe Anyinsah but Stephen Ireland equalised for City in the 108 minute to bring the game to an end all square. But it was Michael Ball who’s penalty was very soft allowing the Brighton keeper to save & put them through to the next round.

It was Aston Villa’s turn to feel Ian Dowies affinity with the Carling cup as they lost 1-0 to Qpr. The goal came on 58th minutes when defender Damion Stewart rose to head the ball home. All Aston Villa could do has huff & puff but they couldn’t find the next goal & go out of the competition.

Newcastle were beaten again this time by Tottenham 2-1. In a battle of the bottom two sides in the premier league in was Tottenhamwho struck first in the 62 minute with a headed goal from Pavlyuchenko for his first goal for the club. Then Newcastle made a bad defensive mistake 5 minutes later to let in Jamie O’Hara to side foot it in for number two. Michael Owen did pull one back in the 89th minute but it was to late & sent Newcastle out.

Portsmouth must be wondering where there defenders have gone after conceding 6 last week to City now conceded 4 more to Chelsea. It started with a penalty on 35 minutes from Frank Lampard after Ballack had been bundled over in the penalty box. Florent Mulouda then made it two just before the break. Another terrible mistake from David James gifted Lampard his second & Chelsea’s third on 50 minutes & then to cap it off a bad defensive mistake on 65 minutes let in Kalou to get there fourth..

Wigan produced a super second half performance to beat Ipswich 4-1 when they could have bin behind at half time. But the first goal didn’t come untill the 52nd minute when Lee Cattermole put his scruffy shot into the net from a rebound. but Ipswich equalised 10 minutes later from a Jon Walters Volley but it only took Wigan 5 minutes to retake the lead from a Oliver Kapo header & after another 5 minutes Wigan went further ahead with a close finish from Paul Scharner. Ipswich tried to get back into the game but it was sealed for Wigan in stoppage time when sub Henry Camara headed home from a corner beyond Richard Wright..

Blackburn edged out Everton 1-0 at Ewood Park. It was a goal in the 10th minute from youngster Martin Olsson who was making his first start.
