Villarreal stayed top of the early La Liga table, but reigning champions Real Madrid are not far behind them.  Villarreal beat Sporting Gijon 1-0 in Gijon. The goal came from half time substitute Giuseppe Rossi in the 63rdminute. Real Madrid managed a late 2-1 away victory over Real Betis. Gabriel Heinze opened the scoring for Real in the 19thminute with an excellent header.  Marcelo was dismissed in the 53rdminute after conceding a penalty. Sergio Garcia’s penalty was saved but he converted the rebound.  Sergio Garcia was then dismissed after 83 minutes. Madrid snatched a 91st minute winner through Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

Barcelona won the Catalan derby 2-1 against Espanyol. Espanyol took a 20thminute lead through a messy Ferren Corominas strike.   Espanyol lost Anderson Nene after 45 minutes for a second bookable offence. The game had to be stopped late in second half due to crowd trouble. This disruption seemed to have effect Espanyol more than Barcelona.  Barcelona took full advantage of this disruption by equalising through Thierry Henry in the 84thminute. The goal came after a mix between Daniel Jarque and goalkeeper Carlos Kameni. Lionel Messi scored the winner from the penalty spot, this goal came 13 minutes into injury time.
