Real Madrid clinched a victory thanks to a Gonzalo Higuain late penalty, in the Madrid derby. Ruud Van Nistelrooy gave a Real a quick lead on 34 seconds to silence the home fans at the Vicente Calderon. Atletico’s day got even worse after 30 minutes when defender Luis Perea was dismissed for lashing out at Wesley Sneijder. In the 39th minute Real then had Van Nistelrooy sent off for a bad tackle on Maniche. Atletico piled on the pressure after half-time and rewarded for that pressure, when substitute Simao Fired home a free-kick, with just a minute remaining.  Just when Atletico thought they had claimed a point, Roysten Drenthe was fouled in the box by Johnny Heitinga in injury time. Argentine Higuain stepped up to the spot and made no mistake with the penalty, leaving Real with yet another late victory. The other game of the day ended goalless, as Espanyol and Villarreal drew a blank. Espanyol missed a penalty through Raul Tamudo, as Villarreal keeper Diego Lopez produced a fantastic save. This result was enough to put Villarreal temporarily top of La Liga.

Sunday 19th October 2008

Valencia returned to the top of the table, after a convincing 4-0 win over Numancia. David Villa scored a opened the scoring on just four minutes. Juan Mata scored the second in the 72nd minute. Numancia then caved in completely, with Vicente scoring a third goal for Valencia in the 83rd minute. Villa finished the rout, with his second just a minute from time. Barcelona secured their five consecutive win, with a 1-0 win against Bilbao. The away side scored the only goal in the 63rd minute through a Samuel Eto’o strike. Sevilla won 1-0 against Almeria, at the Mediterraneo Stadium. Adriano scored the only goal in the 52nd minute, with a superb drive.

Real Betis beat Real Mallorca 3-0 at Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera, to collect their first three points of the campaign. Tamia started the scoring after just two minutes for Betis. Mariano Pavone and Achille Emana scored the other goals. Malaga beat Getafe 2-1, at home to go Seventh in the league. Roberto Soldado gave Getafe the lead, only for Nabil Baha and Duda to score to swing the game in Malaga’s way.  Sporting Gijon won 2-1 against Osasuna, at home. Gijon took the lead through Gonzalez Carmelo. Santiago Ezquerro equalised for Osasuna. Gijon won the game thanks to a Mate Bilic penalty.

Real Valladolid drew 1-1 at home with Recreativo, to avoid a third consecutive defeat. Ruben opened the scoring for the visitors in the 45th minute. Valladolid rescued a late point thanks to a 90th minute Victor goal. Racing Santander drew 0-0 with Deportivo La Coruna. The home side had midfielder Peter Luccin sent-off late on in the game, but Deportivo couldn’t do enough to snatch victory.
