Spanish La Liga Round Six

Saturday 4th October 2008

Barcelona continued their winning run by beating Atletico Madrid 6-1 at the Nou Camp. Barcelona took a 3rd minute lead through Rafael Marquez. That lead was extended in the 6st minute through a Samuel Eto’o penalty. Argentina international Lionel Messi then made it 3-0 for Barca. Maxi Rodriguez got a goal back for the visitors with an excellent long range strike. Samuel Eto’o then scored his second to make it 4-1. Eidur Gudjohnsen and Thierry Henry then scored a goal each, to make a really good night for Barca and their fans. Villarreal went back to the top of the La Liga table by beating Real Betis 2-1. It was Villarreal’s fifth straight win, as their impressive start to the season continued. Real Betis took the lead through Tamia in the 21st minute. Villarreal managed to turn the game on its head, with goals from Gonzalo Rodriguez and striker Joseba Llorente.

Sunday 5th October 2008

Valencia went back to the top of the league by beating Real Valladolid 1-0 away from home. The goal came from former Everton midfielder Manuel Fernandes, who struck an excellent shot on the 54th minute.  Elsewhere Sevilla scored an impressive 4-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao. Sevilla moved up to third with goals from Frederic Kanoute, Renato, Adriano Correia and Ernesto Chevanton. Champions Real Madrid could only manage a 2-2 draw with Espanyol at the Bernabeu. The champions went behind twice, first to a Raul Tamudo penalty in the 21st minute and then Luis Garcia struck in the 31st minute.  Real legend Raul equalised twice for the champions. However this will be seen as points dropped in the race for the La Liga crown.

Almeria managed to grab a late point away to Getafe as the game ended 2-2. Goals from Ikechukwu Uche and Casquero had put the home side in a 2-0 and they must have thought they had secured the win until late drama. Striker Alvaro Negredo struck in the 87th minute to give the away side hope and in the 91st minute Chico scored Almeria’s second to give them an unlikely point. Deportivo recorded a 1-0 home win over Numancia. Angel Lafita Castillo’s 13th minute strike was enough to secure victory for Depor and have Numancia looking over their shoulders nervously at the relegation zone.

Sporting Gijon managed to secure an unlikely 2-0 away victory against Real Mallorca. Carmelo and Roberto Canella scored the vital goals for Gijon, to secure Gijon’s first points of the season. Recreativo suffered a 4-0 home hammering from Malaga. The Malaga Goals came from Nabil Baha, Duda and two from Eliseu. Osasuna suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Racing Santander. Osasuna lost Jaroslav Plasil after he handled in the box in the 39th minute. Ezequiel Garay then missed the resulting penalty.  Santander did finally make their one man advantage count in time added on, through a Juan Valera strike. That goal secured all three points and moved Santander out of the relegation zone.

Spanish La Liga Round Five

Villarreal stayed top of the early La Liga table, but reigning champions Real Madrid are not far behind them.  Villarreal beat Sporting Gijon 1-0 in Gijon. The goal came from half time substitute Giuseppe Rossi in the 63rdminute. Real Madrid managed a late 2-1 away victory over Real Betis. Gabriel Heinze opened the scoring for Real in the 19thminute with an excellent header.  Marcelo was dismissed in the 53rdminute after conceding a penalty. Sergio Garcia’s penalty was saved but he converted the rebound.  Sergio Garcia was then dismissed after 83 minutes. Madrid snatched a 91st minute winner through Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

Barcelona won the Catalan derby 2-1 against Espanyol. Espanyol took a 20thminute lead through a messy Ferren Corominas strike.   Espanyol lost Anderson Nene after 45 minutes for a second bookable offence. The game had to be stopped late in second half due to crowd trouble. This disruption seemed to have effect Espanyol more than Barcelona.  Barcelona took full advantage of this disruption by equalising through Thierry Henry in the 84thminute. The goal came after a mix between Daniel Jarque and goalkeeper Carlos Kameni. Lionel Messi scored the winner from the penalty spot, this goal came 13 minutes into injury time.

Valencia knocked Villarreal off the top of La Liga table, by beating Deportivo 4-2 at the Mestalla. Deportivo took the lead on 11 minutes through an Emiliano Moretti own goal. Juan Mata headed home for Valencia’s equaliser.  David Villa gave Valencia the lead on the 49thminute. Joaquin extended that lead on 69 minutes. David Villa completed his brace in the 82ndminute to make it 4-1 for Valencia. Angel Lafita scored a late consolation goal for Deportivo.  Sevilla clinched an excellent 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at Vicente Calderon Stadium.  The goal came from a 21stminute Luis Fabiano free-kick.

Almeria beat Recreativo Huelva 1-0. Recreativo ended up with only eight men. Pablo Oliveira and Antonio Vasquez were dismissed late in the game for the away side, before Almeria finally got the winner in the 85thminute through last season’s top goalscorer Alvaro Negredo. The game got even worse for Recreativo after the goal, as Sisi was also sent off.  Real Mallorca secured a good 2-1 away victory against Racing Santander.  Ivan Marcano gave Santander a 23rdminute lead, before Fernando Varela equalised just before half-time for Mallorca. Cameroons Pierre Webo headed home a late winner to give Mallorca the three points.

Getafe beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0 in Bilbao. Francisco Casquero scored the winner late on in the game for the visitors. Malaga managed their first victory of this season by beating Real Valladolid 2-1 at La Rosaleda.  Malaga’s goals came from Manuel Lolo in the 34thminute and Adrian Lopez in the 56st minute. Pedro Leon managed a late consolation for Valladolid. Osasuna and Numancia could only manage a goalless draw at Numancia. 

Spanish La Liga Round Three

In Saturdays matches in La Liga Espanyol managed to stay top despite a 1-1 draw with Getafe.  Getafe took the lead at the Olimpic Lluid Companys Stadium, through a 58th minute Del Moral Manu penalty. The home side hit back in the 69th minute through Sanchez as the claimed a share of the points.

In Madrid, Atletico were rampant as they beat Recreativo 4-0. Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero started the scoring in the eighth minute. Portuguese international Maniche made it 2-0 after 53 minutes.  Former Liverpool hitman Florent Sinama-Pongolle fired in two goals in the last twelve minutes to make it a 4-0.

In the Sunday games Barcelona claimed their first victory under new coach Pep Guardiola.  Barcelona claimed victory in style by beating newly promoted Sporting Gijon in Gijon.  Barca had previously only pick up two points from their opening two games.  Xavi opened the scoring for the Barca after 27 minutes.  Samuel Eto’o doubled Barca’s lead after 33 minutes. Barcelona then got lucky with Jorge heading into his own net after 50 minutes.  Gijon managed to get a goal back through Francisco Maldonado just a minute later. Gerard was then rather harshly sent off for Sporting Gijon as their day just got worse. Andres Iniesta added a fourth for Barcelona. Lionel Messi added two more goals to make it even more convincing.

Valencia beat 10-man Osasuna 1-0 at the Mestalla.  Cesar Azpilicueta was shown a red card in the 63 minute.  Valencia took till the 83rd minute to capitalise with a Juan Mata effort. Villarreal had to come from one goal down to claim a 2-1 victory over Numancia. Numancia took the lead just before half on the 44th minute through Gorka Brit. Villarreal got back into the game early in the second half through a Santi Cazorla goal.  Joseba Llorente then went on to score a 74th minute winner for the Yellow Submarines.

Almeria beat Malaga 1-0 as both teams ended up with ten men.  Striker Alvaro Negredo scored the winning goal in the 75minute.  Miguel Angel was red carded in the 80th minute for Malaga. Almeria then had a player dismissed with Jose Ortiz being sent off in the 87th minute.  Bilbao beat Valladolid 2-0. The goals came from Fernando Llorente and a Andoni Iraola penalty. Elsewhere Real Betis and Sevilla could only manage a goalless draw. Deportivo and Mallorca also drew 0-0. Deportivo had Mexican striker Omar Bravo dismissed. The visitors also finished with ten men as David Navarro was shown red.

Spanish La Liga Round Two

In the second round of La Liga Barcelona were held to a Draw by Racing Santander. Elsewhere Sevilla beat Sporting Gijon to go to the top of the early La Liga table. Atletico Madrid suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Valladolid.

The Barcelona revolution hasn’t seemed to of taken off just yet. Barcelona could only manage a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou. Barcelona struggled to breakdown their stubborn opposition. It took them 71 minutes to make the breakthrough, that coming from a Lionel Messi penalty. Barcelona’s lead didn’t last long however as Santander equaliser six minutes later. Santander’s goal came from Jonathan Pereira as they claimed their second draw in two league games.

Elsewhere Sevilla beat 4-1 Sporting Gijon in an entertaining encounter. In the first half there were 6 goals in amazing half of football. Mate Bilic struck first for Gijon in the 20th minute. Just two minutes later Bilic scored his second. Sevilla hit back almost straight as Javier Chevanton scored to make it   2-1. Sevilla equalised in the 36st minute through Freddi Kanoute. Enzo Maresca completed an amazing turnaround just a minute later as he made it 3-2 to Sevilla. Mate Bilic completed his Hat-trick just before the break to make it 3-3 at half time. Sevilla secured victory through another Freddi Kanoute strike in the 60st minute.

Atletico Madrid suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Valladolid. Angel Vivar Dorado gave Valladolid the lead. Valladolid then had Pedro Lopez dismissed. Despite this dismissal Valladolid still managed to make it 2-0 in the 28th minute through a Javier Baraja penalty. Even with a man extra, Atletico couldn’t take advantage as they struggled to get back into the game. They did however get a consolation goal in the 54th minute through Argentine forward Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero.

In the Sunday games from La Liga Villarreal scraped past Deportivo, while Espanyol beat Recreativo Huelva, Real Mallorca and Osasuna drew.

Villarreal beat Deportivo 1-0. The goal came in the 27th minute from Spanish international Santi Carzorla. Luis Garcia scored the winner for Espanyol in their 1-0 victory over Recreativo. The striker struck in the 86st minute. Real Mallorca and Osasuna drew 1-1 in Mallorca. Aritz Aduriz gave Mallorca the lead only to see Javier Portillo equalise with just five minutes remaining. Mallorca went down to ten men as Jose Rey was dismissed. Elsewhere at Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Perez Getafe and Real Betis played out an uneventful 0-0 draw. Malaga and Athletic Bilbao also drew 0-0.

Real Madrid beat Numancia 4-3 at the Bernabeu in an amazing game. The newly promoted Numancia took a surprise lead after just six minutes through Juan Carlos Moreno. Guti then equalised for Madrid, the game didn’t stay level for long though as Jose Bakero struck a spectacular effort to put Numancia ahead again. Gonzalo Higuain equalised in the 25thminute after a good passing move.  Rafael Van Der Vaart then hit an excellent drive to put Real back in front. Madrid then extended the lead through a Cisma Domingo own goal. Moreno then struck again with an excellent free-kick to put Numancia back in the game. Real held onto all three points.

Almeria and Valencia drew 2-2 at Mediterraneo Stadium. The game was an entertaining encounter.  Almeria took the lead in the 21st minute through Argentine midfielder Pablo Piatti. Valencia hit back from a corner with centre back Alexis firing past the home sides goalkeeper. Almeria regained the lead just before half time through last season’s top goalscorer Alvaro Negredo. Spanish international David Villa brought the scores level in the 69th minute, after that both sides seemed happy to settle for a point.

 

Spanish La Liga Round One

Sunday 30th August

The first two games of round one of La Liga saw Espanyol beat Real Valladolid 1-0 and Valencia beating Real Mallorca 3-0.  Luis Garcia scored Espanyols winner against Valladolid in the 49th minute. This was the first goal of the La Liga Season.  David villa gave Valencia the lead after 35 minutes. That lead was doubled by Juan Mata just three minutes later. Vicente completed the scoring in the 82nd minute for Valencia.

Sunday 31st August

The two favourites for the La Liga title both suffered defeats in the first round of games in La Liga. Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat away from home to Deportivo. Barcelona were beaten 1-0 at league newcomers Numancia. This season was meant to be the rejuvenation of a Barcelona team who looked very stale last season. In their first game of the season they looked just like the team that appeared under the leadership of Frank Rijkaard. Barca were beaten by a 13th minute Mario goal. They had no answer to the newly promoted team.

Real Madrid were also poor away in Coruna.  The home team took the lead on the 27th minute through Miguel Mista.  Real equalised just after the break on the 47th minute through Dutchman Ruud Van Nistelrooy and must of thought that they could go on to win the game. Albert Lopo scored the winner just five minutes after Real’s equaliser.

Second place team last season Villarreal fared only slightly better with a 1-1 draw against Osasuna.  Villarreal took the lead through Marcos Senna nine minutes into the second half. Iranian Javad Nekounam levelled the scores through a free-kick on the 68th minute. Hugh Leal was sent off after conceding the free kick that resulted in the goal. Osasuna then had Bejunartea Miguel Flano sent off in the 78th minute.

Atletico Madrid managed a big 4-0 victory over Malaga. Two Diego Forlan goals, a Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero goal and the scoring was completed by former Liverpool player Florent Sinama-Pongolle. Sevilla could only manage a 1-1 draw with Racing Santander. Luis Fabiano opened the scoring for Sevilla in the 71st minute.  Only for Juan Juanjo to come off the bench to grab an equaliser 5 minutes later.  Almeria beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 with Hernan Pellerano (7), Alvaro Negrado (33) and Juan Manuel Ortiz (50) scoring the goals for the away side. Ion Velez scored a consolation goal in the 56th minute for Bilbao.

Recreativo Huelva beat Real Betis 1-0 in Andalucia. Perez Adrian Colunga scored the only goal of the game in the 36st minute. Getafe won 2-1 against Sporting Gijon thanks to a winner just four minutes from time. Getafe took the lead in the 14th minute through Juan Albin. Gimenez Diego Castro scored an equaliser in the 35th minute for Gijon. Javier Casquero scored the winner four minutes from time.
