Real Madrid got back to winning ways, with an unconvincing 1-0 victory over Recreativo. Wesley Sneijder scored the only goal on 39 minutes, through a drilled shot which was deflected past Asier Riesgo in the Recreativo goal. Sevilla and Valencia played out a 0-0, in Seville. The teams are level on points in fourth and five with 24 points for the season.
Elsewhere Villarreal suffered a surprised home defeat to Valladolid. The visitors came away with a 3-0 victory. Valladolid opened the scoring on 22 minutes through Jonathan Sesma. Sesma then made it 2-0 after 42 minutes with a clever lob. Luis Prieto made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time. Prietos free-kick went through keeper Diego Lopez and it has to go down as a goalkeeping error.
Sunday 23rd November
Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 with Numancia, after conceding in the last minute. Diego Forlan gave Atletico the lead after 34 minutes. Jose Barkero gave the home side a point with a last gasp goal from the penalty spot. Osasuna beat Almeria 3-1, to record only their second victory of the season. Alvaro Negredo gave Almeria the lead on 8 minutes, from the penalty spot. On 10 minutes Guilherme was sent-off for Almeria. Walter Pandiani equalised for Osasuna on 15 minutes. Hernan Pellerano scored an own goal after 71 minutes, to give Osasuna the lead. Krisztian Vadocz confirmed the three points for the home side in the 90th minute.
Racing Santander recorded a 3-0 home victory against Espanyol. Ivan Marcano scored in the 11th minute to give Racing the lead. Oscar Serrano doubled Racings lead after 26 minutes. Jonathan finished the scoring in the 59th minute to make it 3-0. Mallorca and Malaga drew 2-2. The visitors Malaga took the lead in the 12th minute, through an Ivan Barrios own goal. Jose Rey equalised for the home side on 18 minutes. Malaga regained the lead after 24 minutes through a Nabil Baha goal. Pierre Webo earned Mallorca the draw with a 67th minute equaliser.
Real Betis claimed a 2-1 victory at Sporting Gijon. Sporting took the lead after 25 minutes through Diego Castro. Real Betis equalised after 53 minutes through Luciano Monzon. The winner came from Achille Emana after 60 minutes. Barcelona could only manage a 1-1 draw with Getafe at Nou Camp. Getafe took the lead through an excellent strike from Manu after 19 minutes. Seydou Keita equalised for Barca in the 71st minute with a close range header. Barca pushed for a winner but couldn’t find one, as Getafe held on for a well earned point.
Deportivo beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 at the Riazor. Ze Castro gave Depor the lead after 20 minutes. Depor midfielder Joan Verdu made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after 44 minutes. Bilbao got a goal back after 72 minutes through a Javi Martinez header. Andres Guardado secured all three points for the home side deep into injury time.

Title challengers Valencia and Real Madrid were both surprisingly beaten, in the first games of round eleven. Valladolid beat Real 1-0 thanks to a Fabian Canobbio strike on 49 minutes. This defeat has increased the pressure on Real manager Bernd Schuster, who is looking increasing unlikely to be in his job much longer.
Valencia suffered a 3-2 defeat against Sporting Gijon at the Mestalla. Luis Moran gave Sporting Gijon the lead after 20 minutes. It got even better for the visitors on 52 minutes, as David Barral doubled their lead. David Villa made it 2-1 from the penalty spot in the 69th minute. Sporting then made it 3-1 after 79 minutes, through a Diego Castro wonder strike. Juan Mata scored a second goal for Valencia in injury time, but it was too late for Los Ches.

Villarreal missed the chance to get closer to Barcelona at the top of the table, after they drew 2-2 with Malaga. Giuseppe Rossi opened the scoring after 8 minutes for the Yellow Submarines, only for Duda to equalise for Malaga on the half hour mark. Joseba Llorente gave Villarreal a 2-1 lead. Helder Rosario scored a dramatic 90th minute equaliser for Malaga to make it 2-2. Sevilla managed a 2-0 away victory at Getafe. Luis Fabiano scored the first in the 36st minute and Tom De Mul ensured a victory with a second goal in injury time.
Atletico Madrid beat Deportivo 4-1 and jumped above them into sixth in the table. Johnny Heitinga gave Atletico the lead on 26 minutes. Diego Forlan then scored in the 53rd and 82nd minutes to give Atletico a 3-0 lead. Maxi Rodriguez added a fourth in the 68th minute. Luis Filipe gave Deportivo a consolation on 88 minutes but it was too little too late for Depor. Athletic Bilbao beat Osasuna 2-0, to claim only their second victory of the season. The goals came from Joseba Garmendia in the 16th minute and a Fernando Llorente strike in the 88th minute.
Numancia beat Espanyol 4-3 in a goal bonanza. It was a good away win for Numancia. Txomin Nagore gave Numancia the lead after 15 minutes. Hurtado hit back for Espanyol in the 35th minute. Antonio Guayre then put Numancia back in the lead in the 53rd minute. Daniel Jarque put Espanyol back on level terms after 64 minutes, before Raul Tamudo put Espanyol ahead. Numancia came back with two late goals to steal the game 4-3. The goals came from Jose Barkero in the 86st minute and a 90th minute winner from substitute Carlos Bellvis.
Almeria beat Mallorca 2-1 to climb to eighth in the league. Alvaro Negredo gave Almeria the lead just before half time, in the 44th minute. Negredo doubled Almeria’s lead from the penalty spot in the 67th minute. Alhassane Keita gave Mallorca a consolation goal in injury time. Almeria held on, however to claim a 2-1 victory. Real Betis claimed a 3-1 home victory against Racing Santander. Sergio Garcia scored a double with goals in the 29th and 72nd minutes. Sandwiched in between those strikes was a 38th minute goal from Achille Emana. Racings goal came from Pedro Munitis in the 86st minute. Barcelona had to work hard for a 2-0 victory away at Recreativo. Barca took the lead through Lionel Messi in the 51st minute, after a cleverly taken free-kick by Xavi put him through on goal. Victory was ensured in the 86st minute when Seydou Keita tapped in from close range.

The big two in Spain, Barcelona and Real Madrid both won in contrasting style. Barcelona hammered Valladolid 6-0 at the Nou Camp. Samuel Eto’o was in devastating form as he hit four goals. Eto’o opened the scoring after 12 minutes from a Daniel Alves pass. His second came after 30 minutes he followed up Thierry Henrys saved shot and found the net. Eto’o completed his hat-trick after 42 minutes thanks to an assist from Lionel Messi. Eto’o then scored Barcas fourth just a minute later with Messi again playing his part in the move. Eidur Gudjohnsen made it 5-0 in the 70 minute with a chipped finish. Thierry Henry completed the rout in the 83rd minute with an assist from Alexander Hleb to complete Valladolid’s misery.
Real Madrid’s victory didn’t come so easy however as they beat Malaga 4-3. Gonzalo Higuain equalled Eto’os four goals as Real scrapped passed Malaga. Malaga took the lead in the 6st minute through Eliseu. Higuain levelled it up for Real just two minutes later after Marcelo’s shot had been parried. Nabil Baha put Malaga in the lead again on 18 minutes. Higuain however put Real back on level terms again in the 37th minute from the penalty spot. Sergio Ramos was dismissed before half time to make it more difficult for Real. Malaga took the lead for the third time on 70 minutes with Antonio Apono scoring from the spot. Higuain scored an amazing equaliser just a minute later. He then found the winner in the 80th minute after his penalty was saved he react first to find the net.
Sunday 9th November
Villarreal beat Almeria 2-1 to go into second place in La Liga and maintain the only unbeaten record in the league. Giuseppe Rossi scored the first for the Yellow submarines in the first minute. Joseba Llorente then added the second after 15 minutes. Argentina starlet Pablo Piatti scored the goal for Almeria in the 61st minute. It wasn’t enough though as Villarreal held on for all three points. The game between Atletico Madrid and Osasuna ended in a 0-0 draw. That left Osasuna still bottom of the table.
Real Mallorca and Athletic Bilbao drew 3-3 in a pulsating match. Cleber Santana opened the scoring on 11 minutes for Mallorca. Androni Iraola equalised for Bilbao from the penalty spot in the 43rd minute. Juan Arango then scored a brace his first in the 57th minute and 74 minute for Mallorca. That looked like that was going to be enough for a home victory but Bilbao had other ideas. Francisco Yeste gave Bilbao a way back into the game in the 79th minute. Fernando Llorente then completed a remarkable comeback, with a last gasp equaliser for Bilbao to claim a 3-3 draw and a valuable point.
Deportivo beat Espanyol 1-0 at home to move to sixth in La Liga. Mexico Andres Guardado scoring the goal after 37 minutes. Racing Santander claimed a 1-0 victory over Sporting Gijon. Mohamed Tchite scored the only goal on 58 minutes. Racing won despite having Jonathan Pereira Sent-off near the end. Numancia lost out 4-2 to Real Betis at home. Javier Del Pino gave Numancia a 27th minute lead, only for Achille Emana to equalise from the penalty spot six minutes later. Real Betis then raced ahead with two goals from Mehmet Aurelio and Juanito before half-time to make it 3-1. Jose Barkero scored in the 56st minute to get Numancia back into the game. Mehmet Aurelio scored in the 85th minute to confirm all three points and a 4-2 victory. Sevilla beat Recreativo 1-0 in Seville. Sevilla scrapped a victory thanks to a 63rd minute Freddie Kanoute header. Valencia beat Getafe 3-0 to go third in La Liga. Manuel Fernandes struck a fantastic long range strike in the 29th minute to give Los Ches the lead. Roberto Soldado was dismissed before half-time which made it even harder for Getafe to get back into the game. Joaquin struck an excellent volley in the 69th minute to make it 2-0 and Vicente added a third in the 81st minute to confirm the three points..

In round nine of La Liga Barcelona shot to the top of the league, with a 4-1 victory over Malaga. Xavi opened the scoring for Barca after 5 minutes with a brilliant free-kick. Malaga hit back on 13 minutes through Duda. Lionel Messi restored Barcas lead on 19 minutes with a low strike. Xavi grabbed his second and Barca’s third in the 53rd minute thanks to an assist from Thierry Henry. Dani Alves scored a deflected free-kick after 81 minutes to give Barca a comfortable 4-1 away victory.
Valencia were beaten at home 4-2 to Racing, a surprise defeat considering Valencia were top before this weekend. Mohamed Tchite gave Racing the lead on 23 minutes. David Villa put Valencia back on level terms with a penalty. Early in the second half Tchite scored his second goal to put the visitors back in front. Joaquin then brought Valencia level once again. Tchite scored his hat-trick on 80 minutes with a header from a set-piece. On 85 minutes things got worse for Valencia as David Albelda put through his own goal to make it 4-2 to Racing.
Villarreal beat Athletic 4-1 at El Madrigal and are now just one point off Barca. Giuseppe Rossi gave the home side the lead on 24 minutes. Joseba Etxeberria headed home after 29 minutes to equalise for the away side. Robert Pires put Villarreal back in front from a Rossi assist. Santo Cazorla made it 3-1 after an hour. Jozy Altidore completed the scoring, after being set up by Santi Cazorla. Atletico Madrid beat Mallorca 2-0. Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero scored both goals. The first came after 14 minutes, after Diego Forlan set him up with a headed pass. The second came after 28 minutes when the Uruguayan and Aguero combined well again for Aguero to finish well, from a short distance out.
2nd November 2008
On Sunday, Real Madrid drew 1-1 at Almeria and missed the chance to go level with Barca, at the top of the league. Real took the lead in the 38th minute through a Raul header. Pablo Piatti rescued a draw late on with a left footed effort. Real Valladolid came back from two goals down to Sevilla to win 3-2. Renato and Jesus Navas gave Sevilla a two goal lead. Then came a turning point in the game, as Sevilla had Luis Fabiano dismissed. Valladolid got a goal back just before half-time through Sesma Jonathan. Fabian Canobbio came on as a substitute and scored two goals, as the home side completed an amazing turnaround.
Getafe drew 1-1 with Recreativo Huelva. Javi Guerrero scored for Recreativo, only to see his team mate Bouzon Amoedo sent off for two bookable offences. Despite battling hard Recreativo couldn’t hold on and in the 83rd minute Juan Angel Albin equalised for Getafe. Sporting Gijon beat Numancia 3-1 at home. Asier Goiria gave the visitors a good start after 20 minutes. The lead didn’t last long however, as Luis Moran equalised soon afterwards for Gijon. Mate Bilic then struck twice for Gijon, his second goal coming from the spot to seal the points.

Saturday 25th October
The two games on Saturday night resulted in a 5-0 victory for Barcelona against Almeria at the Nou Camp and a 2-0 away win for Betis at Osasuna. After just 24 minutes Samuel Eto’o had scored a hat-trick and Thierry Henry had scored also to make it 4-0. Almeria then had Alvaro Negredo dismissed for a badly timed tackle on Rafael Marquez. Barcelona made it 5-0 in the 36st minute through a brilliantly struck Daniel Alves free-kick. Although they had a numerical advantage, Barcelona couldn’t add to the five goals. Real Betis managed to climb out of the relegation zone, after their away win against Osasuna. Mehmet Aurelio scored Betis first goal with a brilliant free-kick in the 51st minute. Betis had to wait until the 86st minute to secure victory, through a Mariano Pavone close range effort.
Sunday 26th October 2008
Valencia returned to the top of the table despite only drawing 1-1 away at Recreativo. Recreativo took the lead on 47 minutes through Javier Camunas. Valencia equalised in the 62nd minute, through David Villa from close range. Sevilla suffered a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Malaga. The goal came after 16 minutes from Adrian, after Nacho put him through. It got worse for Sevilla in the second half, as they had Adriano sent off for violent conduct.
Numancia won 2-1 at home against Racing. Jose Javier Bakero struck after 26 minutes. It looked like that would enough for a Numancia win but then there was an incredible finish. Five minutes into injury time Mohamed Tchite scored from the spot to equalise for Racing. Even more incredibly Numancia snatched a winner a minute later through Cisma from close range. That was enough to take Numancia off the bottom of the table.
Sporting Gijon beat Deportivo 3-0, to earn an impressive away three points. David Barral started the scoring after 23 minutes with a penalty. Carmelo added a second goal for Sporting after 27 minutes, thanks to a Barrel assist. It got even worse for Deportivo when Diego Colotto was dismissed just before the break. Diego Castro finished the scoring in the 84th minute, to give Sporting three very important points.
Mallorca beat Espanyol 3-0 at home. Aritz Aduriz opened the scoring on 49 minutes with a header. Aduriz then scored another header in the 60th minute from a Juan Arango corner. Fernando Varela made it three in the 76st minute. Getafe beat Real Valladolid 1-0 at home. Daniel Diaz scored the only goal of the game in the 32nd minute from an Esteban Granero set piece.
In an amazing game Villarreal drew 4-4 with Atletico Madrid at El Madrigal. Atletico made a fantastic start, scoring after just a minute through a brilliant Simao effort. It got even better for Atletico after 22 minutes when Diego Forlan fired in a second goal. On 38 minutes came a big turning point as Ever Banega received a second Yellow and was dismissed.
Villarreal made a blistering start to the second half, scoring three goals in 10 minutes through Marcos Senna, Joseba Llorente and Gonzalo Rodriguez. Giuseppe Rossi made it 4-2 on 68 minutes. Atletico came back into the match in the 83rd minute thanks to Simao’s second goal of the night. Raul Garcia scored in the 85th minute to complete an amazing comeback and snatch Atletico a draw.
Real Madrid beat Atletico 3-2 at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid went two goals up. Wesley Sneijder scored with a drive after 13 minutes. Gonzalo Higuain scored a second after 29 minutes. It looked like it would be a straight forward victory for Madrid, until Joseba Exteberria got a goal back for Bilbao after 35 minutes. It got even better for Bilbao, as they equalised through a controversial Andoni Iraola penalty. Higuain scored his second goal of the match in the 59th minute. Bilbao continued to fight hard for an equaliser but was reduced to ten men in the 78th minute when Fernando Amorebieta was dismissed. After that Madrid looked the more dangerous and could have extended their lead. Madrid would have been relieved to get the win in the end against a battling Bilbao side.
